How to Evolve Fast

Stage by stage: what each step needs, how part slots grow, and the cards that speed it all up.

Evolving in Evolve a Cell means two separate things that people mix up: leveling up (filling your DNA bar and picking a card) and moving up a stage (the numbered steps from 1 to 7). Both come from eating, but stages are what unlock rebirth and, eventually, the Colossus.

The stage ladder

StageWhat changes
1Starting cell. Roughly 35 cells' worth of food to move on.
2–3More part slots. Your build starts to take shape.
4Rebirth unlocks. Around 9 part slots.
5–6Players and big NPCs become your main food. Up to 16 slots on a full body.
7Locked behind the Colossus skill node. Completing it ends the cell stage.

The exact numbers shift as you grow and may change with updates. The Stages page keeps the details and links to the footage.

What actually makes you evolve faster

1. Eat more of the right thing. Obvious, but the biggest lever is how much food each bite gives. Big Appetite is the best economy card we've seen, and the skill tree has +15% meat DNA and extra plant DNA nodes.

2. Eat both food types. The Feeding Tube makes plants and meat count. In one run, a player went from struggling to leveling every minute after adding it.

3. Go to events. A Feeding Frenzy floods the map with food. Meteor showers hurt, but scatter food that a bigger cell can vacuum up. Red Tide drops carcasses with a marker telling you where.

4. Don't die. Dying throws away the run you were building. Every death in the videos we reviewed came from chasing something too big. Speed and a defensive part (Bubble Shield, Shell) keep runs alive.

Part slots

You can't just keep adding parts. The editor shows "no space" when you're full. Slots grow with your stage — around 5 early, about 9 mid-game, up to 16 on a big late-game body. When you're full, swap rather than stack: drop the weakest part for the new one.

Mutations

Rolls give you a random mutation. The free roll from absorbing Mutagen in the world is worth taking. Some rolls are great (halving drill and tentacle damage), some are situational (Shallows Born). See Mutations.

The short version

Eyes first, then a mouth and speed. Take Big Appetite whenever it appears. Hit events. Don't chase anything bigger than you.
