Brightens your view and lets you see further. Without them the pond is dark.
Eyes matter more than they look. A Thai player built a cell with weapons but no eyes and found the screen noticeably darker; once he added eyes the world brightened and he could zoom out further.
Point them forward. One creator accidentally mounted his on the underside and said he could only see his own backside.
